Letter to McCranium

Jim@McCranium.org

Dear Jim.

Not sure if you remember but we have met at DL in Seattle.

I have a problem that you may be able to help with. For reasons I do not understand, Lee Rosenberg has set out on a campaign of character assassination against me. He has even threatened to mount some sort of campaign to have my UW tenure removed.

He claims to have discussed this with you and that you share his feelings on this. That bothers me a great deal.

The specific issue has to do with Mr. Haq, At the time of his arrest , I was distressed by the effort at mass murder and wrote about my concerns that tolerance not extend to tolerance of bigotry.

FWIW, this was two years ago but somehow it has stuck in Lee's craw. Now he claims I have been on some sort of an effort to vilify the Tri Cities Muslim Center. He claims that I blamed them for Haq's actions. If you read the blog you will see this is simply far, far from the truth,

For what is worth (and you are welcome to read my blog) the blog never mentioned any specifics about Mr. Haq's education. I did talk and write about the issue of wahabiism and the fact that we should be concerned that wahabi ideas are being taught in the US . I provided links to a very good study of Muslim curricula at that time and to effort in the Muslim community to reform.

Lee equates this with an attack on the Tri Cities Muslim community. Frankly I know far to little about the community to make such an assertion. I do know is that Haq received a Muslim education there and his view of Islam led to a terrible decision. Obviously that should raise concerns about how Islam is taught in any school, not just the one Mr. Haq attended. I have written that I see this as a warning flag, hardly the sort of hate speech Lee Rosenberg is spreading.

FWIW, I have made similar comments about other sources of bigotry. I am, unfortunately aware, that the Roman catechism prior to John XXIII, did contain a lot of bigotry vs. the Jews. In my own childhood, students studying these horrid texts stoned me in retribution for the murder of their God. The Dutch Reform Church of South Africa, the WWII Japanese Shinto religion, and the Kach movement in my own people are more than enough examples of this sort of thing.

My bottom line is that I value my reputation of integrity. If you know of anything I have actually done that was wrong or anything lee is saying about my beliefs, I would appreciate constructive feedback.

SeattleJew.

Anyhow, Lee has for reasons I do not understand tried to paint this as bigotry on MY part.

Sighhh ... Jewish Inability to Escape Victimhood Persists

Lee Rosenberg, (aka the him) has recently corresponded with me claiming I have been wrong in my assertions that the Jewish Federation Murder was the act of a Muslim, done out of conviction that Jews are bad, and that this beleif in the Muslim community Is put forward by Muslim schools in the US. NOTE: Lee has complained that this misrepresents what he has said, for the record this his his reply:

  • This is a lie. What I said was that you asserted that Haq himself was taught to hate Jews. You changed this to say that I was challenging the idea that, in general, Muslims in this country are taught to hate Jews. Not the same thing.
Leaving all else aside, Lee says that I asserted Haq had been taught to hate Jews. While it has been awhile since I wrote those comments, I would still say this and I think the evidence is rather clear. Moreover, the Muslim community in the US is itself trying to deal with this issue.

wGiven Jewish history, When a young Muslim plans a mass murder of Jews, of course we should worry about what he has been taught. When more than one American Muslim does this, we need to worry more. When we read the Freedom House report of the distribution of Wahabist materials to Wahabi funded mosques and the Muislim on Jewish violonece in Europe, the level of concern of all Americans should be increased.

Anyhow, if Lee can figure out what he wants to say he is always welcome to post here or raise the issue over at HA if he likes.

So lets get a few facts. First, I already posted the Freedom House study a long time ago. When Mr. Haq was a chld, islamic hate groups were the major fund source of new Islamic centers and mosques and careful studies by FH, hardly a Jewish organization by the way, provided many examples of this.

Obviously I do not know to what extent his childhood education was the seed of Haq's later actions, but denying the problem of hate teaching in Muslim schools in that era is .. well hard to explain. Where else does Lee think Mr. Haq got the training that led to his plan to assassinate a bunch of Jews?

Lee's reasons for not wanting to see Mr. Haq as a biggot go beyond the issue of how he became one. In out long ago debate, Lee had pushed the idea that Islam could not be blamed because Mr. Haq had converted to some Chriustian sect. Obviousty, Mr. Haq has less knowledge than Mr. Rosenberg of what religious training motivated the murder:

FOXNews.com - Officials: Seattle Shooting Suspect Ambushed 13-Year-Old - Crime | Murder | Illegal Drugs | Missing Kids | Illegal Aliens: "Haq, a Muslim, told authorities he was angered by the war in Iraq and U.S. military cooperation with Israel.

'He pointedly blamed the Jewish people for all of these problems,' Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said at a news conference Saturday.

According to a statement of probable cause, Haq told a 911 dispatcher: 'These are Jews and I'm tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East.'"

..............

Police and the FBI are labeling the shootings a hate crime.

Haq entered the King County courtroom on Saturday wearing handcuffs, chains and leg shackles, and a white jail jumpsuit that labeled him an "ultra security inmate."

'I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel': "'He said, 'I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel,' before opening fire on everyone,' said Marla Meislin-Dietrich, a database coordinator for the center. 'He was randomly shooting at everyone.'"

JDL Daily PostsJustice may not be served in the case of the filthy murderer of a Jewish woman in a premeditated attack at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle almost two years ago. According to published reports, the jury is deadlocked in its deliberations in the trial of Naveed Afzal Haq, who took a teenager hostage and entered the Jewish community building on July 28, 2006, where he murdered Pamela Waechter, 58, and seriously wounded five other Jews.

It evidently doesn't matter to jurors that Haq, who was 30 at the time of the terrorist attack, carefully planned out his actions for days. Proof was presented by the prosecution that Haq had conducted Internet searches for Jewish organizations in the Seattle area. He also purchased firearms specifically for the attack, waited the 10 days for a background check and coolly picked them up.

Even though Haq previously pleaded guilty, attorneys got the court to accept a new plea of 'not guilty by reason of insanity.' If he is convicted of aggravated murder in Waechter's death, Haq would be given an automatic life sentence. But it doesn't look like the jury is going to convict him of murder. The"

Marijuan and Compliance

Hi Greg,

I ran across your name on a blog I use, HorsesAss. Basically a friend of mine, Lee Rosenberg, is advocating the "rights" of transplant patients to medical marijuana. He refers to a Stranger article using you as a reference.

While I am personally a strong advocate of legalized MJ and am impressed with the clinical work on THC, I worry that misplaced activism will misuse the MMJ issue to cause even more harm at the UW from "compliance."

I wonder if you would be interested in replying.
If you want I can post to HA or (really) I suggest you post. either ion HA or at my blog, SeattleJew.

Lee is a good guy, but it seems to me that academics need to be firm as we can about keeping the politcal process out of clinical medicine.

Here is my post.

It refers to the piece on HA and that refers to a piece in the Stranger.

YELLOW JOURNALISM

Last night at DL we had a speaker who, rightly, trashed the radical right for its misuse of journalism. His point was that FAUX and fiends misuses the media by lies and slurs. True enough.

So, is the same strategy OK if it is used to promote a liberal cause? I share Lee's enthusiasm for legalizing marijuana ... I even support legalizing marijuana. BUT, that support does not justify swift boat attacks on the medical care system.

The article cited by Lee, has more horse turds than a 1908 NY City street..

Here area few, simple facts:

1. Experts ... Of the two UW "expert" cited in suport of the reporter's attcks on transplant medicine, Dr. Roffman has no relevant credential. Roffman is a (PhD) sociologist specializing in entrepreneurship.

Dr. Greg Carter is a clinician in rehab medicine who does study use of cannabinoids in muscular dystrophy. According to the article, contamination of MJ by a fungus is the major reason userfs of commercial MJ are rejected and Dr. Carter rejects this.

I am sufficiently skeptical that I plan to email Greg Carter and see if I can get him to comment. Until then let me point out to HA readers that njeither Dr. Carter nor I (nor Lee or the Stranger reporter) know the rules used to assign priorities for transplant.

3.Just because some Doc prescribes MJ does not mean that this is good medical practice. As long as something is harmless, as MJ probably is, a physician can prescribe ANYTHING. Your friendly local doc can prescribe massage, sex, herbal tees, or chocolate covered grasshoppers. Marijuana is NOT an approved drug. The designation of MMJ exists BECAUSE of the same dumb laws that pretend it is a gharmful drug.

4. Medical MJ is an impure plant, not very different in its supervison than healthfood peanut butter. Why do I mantion the latter? Well, like MJ, peanut butter is a good "soil" to grw a toxic fungus. If the shop grinds its own PB but is nto sufficiently careful, you may get aflatoxin .. a carcinogen .. along with that PB&J sandwich. I suspect that the fungus Apergillis, can grow on MJ even after it is is provided to a pt unless the stuff is carefully kept.

Given the costs of a transplant and the rarity of donor organs, would it be unreasonable of a transplant committee to prioritize those patients most willing to abode by strict guidance form their physicians?

Finally Lee, all of us are worried about the future of healthcare. As an inmate of the healthcare asylum I can tell you one of the biggest problems we face is overwhelmingly regulation resulting from activists groups.

Wink Wink

In the debate with Lkee Rosenberg, he is correct that I once misused the term "wink wink" to describe the way current law deals with the administration of life ending drugs to the terminal patient.

The poor chice of words reflects two views of physicians.

I think the docs now do a very good job prescribing drugs that will relieve pain and suffering . In a terminal patient, this often involves a trade off that involves a complex, personal moral judgement.

Lee's view, correct me if I am wrong, is that this practice needs to be regulated by a law because terminal patients who have decided to die can not get help from the doctors explicitly for the purpose of suicide rather than relief of suicide.

So, that is where my choice of words was unfortunate. "Wink wink" implies a casual attitude toward this decision. I know all to well that is not the case.

I believe physicians now handle terminal care decisions in a highly responsible way that would be harmed by the intervention of our legal system including the structures set up in I-1000. As I see it the price of I-1000 is to high in terms of undermining a basic tenet of medical ethics and INCREASING the risk of legal intervention where it is not now needed.

I would agree with you that the price of I-100 was worthwhile if I knew that the current law was being abused by physicians or making it hard for the patients covered by the law to get the relief they desire. For example:

1. has any physician been charged with murder or malpractice for providing this sort of relief as opposed to intentionally killing a patient?

2. Are there any cases in our state of terminally ill patients who want to die but are blocked from doing so?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Maybe it would help our interaction if I tried to argue your side? Here it is.

I CAN imagine the possibility that some people in the last six month of life, faced with a deteriorating life style, might want to go to their doctor and say "Please help me end life now."

I suspect that most of my colleagues would first respond by sympathy and addressing the likely issue of depression. (I think the idea that most psychologists are more able than docs to determine depression is a crock). This itself is a hard decision today since we have effective drugs to treat depression. The physician and the patient would likely to have to decide whether to change the patients' mood with drugs. How do you feel about this? Faced with a bad death, depressed over the prospect, should that depression be reviewed before allowing suicide?

Lets suppose that the patient, a near buddha, has no depression but a coldly objective determination not to go through the pain and suffering of death. Does it seem reasonable that a doctor should be able to help with the death?

To be honest I am not sure I know the answer to that one.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My response to this thread is that I am skeptical that this situation arises often enough to require legislation. If I am right, then the merit of I-100 needs to be counterbalanced by the damage done to the Hippocratic oath and by the vulnerability, under I-1000, of the poorest patients.

TheHim threatens my First Amendment Rights

This has gotten way out of control but Lee Rosenberg in email and on his blog is now threatening to have men fired for expressing my opinions about the Quran and Mr. Haq's motivations for killing Jews. Oh yeh, Lee is also upset that I have called him for misrepresenting the facts on marijuana.

Interstikng. Will someone tell me the difference between lee and a Discovery Insitute Fanatic?

Anyhow I am not ocnerned, thans to Tom jefferson we academics do have the first amendment as part of our jobs! Not a bad perk wheh dealing with this sort of agitprop.

Back to citing Lee's blog:

EFFin’ Unsound » Blog Archive » Another Round: "July 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am

OK, let’s count the misrepresentations in this comment:

1. Lee, for some reason, keeps bringing the issue up ind oiscussions of other matters. (the current thread in email he refers to is a disagreement over whether doctos should prescribe reefers, ie smoked marijuana. Le favors this and I do not.)

No, the disagreement is not over whether doctors should prescribe reefers, it’s over whether or not there’s a medical need for marijuana. The difference is that one can ingest marijuana in a number of different ways other than reefers. This has been explained to you several times, yet you continue to lie.

2. While I honestly do not know why the Haq story is important to Lee

That’s clearly a lie. You know exactly why this is important to me. It’s because I think it’s wrong to accuse the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities of teaching Haq to hate Jews without any proof whatsoever.

3. I suspect he feels that Mr. Haq’s anger may be justified by what Lee (and one assumes Haq) sees as the unacceptable behavior of Israel.

Absolutely not. I’ve never once said that his anger towards all Jews is justified by that. I’ve simply said it was caused by that, but I don’t feel it’s justified. That’s lie #3"

4. Returnoing to Mr. Haq, the real issue ought to be whether he is a symptom of a larger problem. Lee does not think so

That’s lie #4. I certainly believe that animosity towards Jews because of Israeli foreign policy is a large problem.

OK, now let’s get back to the heart of the matter…

Was Haq taught this and/or worse as he grew up iand attended Muslim school? It would be vert\y odd if he were not.

First of all, you don’t even know whether or not Haq attended a Muslim school, let alone who was teaching him and what he was being taught. You are making an accusation against a very specific Islamic Center with absolutely no evidence to back you up. As I sent you in email, I’m going to make sure the Islamic Center is aware of this, and unlike the past times this has come up, I will not hesitate to try to get you removed from your job at UW if you don’t stop misrepresenting my views.

Lee,

You may want t look at the post I just placed at SJ and HA clarifying the facts on marijuana. There is, to the best of my knowledge=, no evidence that marijuan is a better drug than THC and THC is legal. The only reason to use marijua as a dleivery vehicle is to provide it as an areodol anmd doing so in a a likley carcoinogenic smoke wis NOT a good idea.

Somehow I find it hard to imgine that the Islamic Center is goinfg to get excited about a post that is now two years old but go ahead.

If I need a spell checker, you need a dose of logic viz.

"4. Returning to Mr. Haq, the real issue ought to be whether he is a symptom of a larger problem. Lee does not think so

That’s lie #4. I certainly believe that animosity towards Jews because of Israeli foreign policy is a large problem."

And the lie is????? Or are you saying you do not think Islam has a long history of antisemitism?

As for going after my job, shall we trade blows? Lets see, I am protected bny my rigrts of free speach and by academci freedom. Your use of pot is protected by? You use of slander is protecte by? Oh well, last time I saw two makes playing thast game one 3=ws a dalmatian and the other poodle. They pee-ed on a lot of trees and then on someone's trousers

Don;'t pee on the trousers Mr,. Dog!

Thehim

"The him" is the nom de web of Lee Rosenberg, a self announced liberal, employed in the software industry, and generally rationally liberal. Thehe is married to theher and edits a Blog.

I recommend Lee's blog for an occasional well done essay on plotics. he can be thoughtful and often is knowledgeable. Except when it comes to one thing. Somehow, Lee has a serious aversion to ethnicity.

This all started out with a diatribe he wrote about my comments about the Quran and Muslim teachings. Like some 60's kid yelling on the street, he accused me of all sorts of evil thoughts. No effort to reassure him that I was smart enough to distinguish the bad from the good, would help. To make matters worse, when he writes about me Lee seems to acquire coprolalia (another word for Tourette's syndrome, an illness where people spout obscenities for no apprarent reason).

Why me? Lee apparently resents my being openly Jewish. As matters progressed, it turns out that Lee has some sort of a problem with Jews, at least Jews who think being Jewish is different form not being Jewish. He identifies himself as being of "Jewish roots" but then spouts forth, for no apparent reason, and becomes defensive about his being intermarried and never having had a bar mitzvah. I would feel badly if I had ever said anything critical about these issues but it sseems to have arisen with thehim himself. I care no more about thehim's roots than Id about Madeline Albright's.

My guess is that Lee is a self conscious Jew who has, unfortunately, assimilated a lot of the subtle antisemitism that refuses to distinguish Jewish identity and pride from arrogance, ethnic superiority, and ...yes .. racism. All this from someone who claims (I find this hard to believe) to know nothing whatsoever about Judaism. I told him how proud I am of all the Nobel's we have won and he, of course, got angry and disparaged me for believing the Jewish heritage had anything to do with all this.

To compound all the criticizes ethnicity of the Jews as "tribalism," that classical Eurocentric distinction between "our" nations and the primitive folk's "tribes"." As in .. "It is unfortunate that the Nigerians can not rise above tribalism." Tell that to my Ibo classmate! Now, now ,, the quote is not from Lee, but it is the kind of racist clap Eurocentric folks say all the time.

The latest contre-temps came when he started swearing at me for expressing my respect for our County Executive, Ron Sims. Ron is a Black politician in the best sense. He is a role;e model for Black kids and has worked hard, when he was a local rep, to help the black community. He speaks movingly of the role his origins, church and culture, have had in shaping his career. He is a proud, successful Black man. But, not to The he. The he wants to rob Ron and the Black community of any pride but that of coming from a good home.

Of course, like all Eurocentrics, he is blind to the fact that his culture is a dominating culture. By denying Ron's ethnic origins, Lee is, in effect saying that the only good society is the he's own. Lee's predecessors are the very people who did so much damage to the cultures of the people's of Puget Sound.

Take a look at his Blog for more. The good part is that he has a lot of good things to say on other issues. But don;t call him a Jew, he might consider that an insult.

9/11 petition, signed by Van Jones ....

911 Truth Statement from their site.  Posted on this date by SJ to respond to comments about van Jones later in the blog.

NEW YORK CITY, NY (Oct. 26, 2004)(Updated Sep. 11, 2009) - An alliance of 100 prominent Americans and 40 family members of those killed on 9/11 today announced the release of the 911 Truth Statement, a call for immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur. The Statement supports an August 31st Zogby poll that found nearly 50% of New Yorkers believe the government had foreknowledge and "consciously failed to act," with 66% wanting a new 9/11 investigation.
Focusing on twelve questions, the Statement highlights areas of incriminating evidence that were either inadequately explored or ignored by the Kean Commission, ranging from insider trading and hijacker funding to foreign government forewarnings and inactive defenses around the Pentagon. The Statement asks for four actions: an immediate investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Congressional hearings, media analysis, and the formation of a truly independent citizens-based inquiry.
The Statement's list of signatories includes notables spanning the political spectrum, from Presidential candidates Ralph Nader, Michael Badnarik, and David Cobb to Catherine Austin Fitts, a member of the first Bush administration, as well as Washington veterans like Pentagon whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and retired CIA analyst Ray McGovern. Other signers range from peace activists like Global Exchange's Kevin Danaher to former US Ambassador and Chief of Mission to Iraq, Edward L. Peck; from environmentalists like Randy Hayes and John Robbins; from populist journalist Ronnie Dugger to renowned investigative reporter Kelly Patricia O'Meara.

The Statement also includes 43 noted authors, including New York Times #1 bestseller John Gray, as well as 18 eminent professors, historians, and theologians. Other notables include five-term Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, singers Michelle Shocked and Michael Franti, and actors Ed Asner and Mimi Kennedy.
The Statement was facilitated by 911truth.org, a leading coalition. The organization has also announced a press conference outside of Eliot Spitzer's Manhattan office (corner of Cedar and Nassau) at 2:00PM on Thursday, Oct. 28th where 9/11 family members and victim group representatives will file a formal complaint demanding the first criminal investigation of 9/11 events by the New York Attorney General.
Page Update 9/9/2009: Following is the actual statement endorsed by these signatories, as referred to in the press release above.
The Statement
We Want Real Answers About 9/11
On August 31, 2004, Zogby International, the official North American political polling agency for Reuters, released a poll that found nearly half (49.3%) of New York City residents and 41% of those in New York state believe US leaders had foreknowledge of impending 9/11 attacks and "consciously failed" to act. Of the New York City residents, 66% called for a new probe of unanswered questions by Congress or the New York Attorney General.

In connection with this news, we have assembled 100 notable Americans and 40 family members of those who died to sign this 9/11 Statement, which calls for immediate public attention to unanswered questions that suggest that people within the current administration may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war.
We want truthful answers to questions such as:
  1. Why were standard operating procedures for dealing with hijacked airliners not followed that day?
SJ: Seems like a reasonable question.
  2. Why were the extensive missile batteries and air defenses reportedly deployed around the Pentagon not activated during the attack?
SJ: Seems like a reasonable question.
  3. Why did the Secret Service allow Bush to complete his elementary school visit, apparently unconcerned about his safety or that of the schoolchildren?
SJ: Seems like a reasonable question.
  4. Why hasn't a single person been fired, penalized, or reprimanded for the gross incompetence we witnessed that day?
SJ: Seems like a reasonable question.
  5. Why haven't authorities in the U.S. and abroad published the results of multiple investigations into trading that strongly suggested foreknowledge of specific details of the 9/11 attacks, resulting in tens of millions of dollars of traceable gains?
  6. Why has Sibel Edmonds, a former FBI translator who claims to have knowledge of advance warnings, been publicly silenced with a gag order requested by Attorney General Ashcroft and granted by a Bush-appointed judge?
  7. How could Flight 77, which reportedly hit the Pentagon, have flown back towards Washington D.C. for 40 minutes without being detected by the FAA's radar or the even superior radar possessed by the US military?
SJ: Seems like a reasonable question.
  8. How were the FBI and CIA able to release the names and photos of the alleged hijackers within hours, as well as to visit houses, restaurants, and flight schools they were known to frequent?
  9. What happened to the over 20 documented warnings given our government by 14 foreign intelligence agencies or heads of state?
  10. Why did the Bush administration cover up the fact that the head of the Pakistani intelligence agency was in Washington the week of 9/11 and reportedly had $100,000 wired to Mohamed Atta, considered the ringleader of the hijackers?
  11. Why did the 911 Commission fail to address most of the questions posed by the families of the victims, in addition to almost all of the questions posed here?
  12. Why was Philip Zelikow chosen to be the Executive Director of the ostensibly independent 911 Commission although he had co-authored a book with Condoleezza Rice?
Those who are demanding deeper inquiry now number in the hundreds of thousands, including a former member of the first Bush administration, a retired Air Force colonel, a European parliamentarian, families of the victims, highly respected authors, investigative journalists, peace and justice leaders, former Pentagon staff, and the National Green Party.
As Americans of conscience, we ask for four things:
  1. An immediate investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer
  2. Immediate investigation in Congressional Hearings.
  3. Media attention to scrutinize and investigate the evidence.
  4. The formation of a truly independent citizens-based inquiry.
Given the importance of the coming election, we feel it is imperative that these questions be addressed publicly, honestly, and rigorously so that Americans may exercise their democratic rights with full awareness.
In closing, we pray and hope for the strength to approach this subject with wisdom and compassion so that we may heal from the wounds inflicted on that terrible day.
