Commander in Chief Fidel Castro received the Special Prize awarded by the Cuban National Union of Historians by virtue of his extraordinary merits as the principal protagonist and profound analyst of the events of the first half century of Revolution. A portrait of José Martí, painted by Camagueyan artist Joel Jover was presented to Abel Prieto, member of the Political Bureau and minister of culture, as a token from the historians to the leader of the Revolution. As part of the Havana Book Fair, researchers Jorge Ibarra, Rolando Rodríguez, Francisca López Civera, and Pedro Álvarez Tabío also received the National History Prize."
