Jared Schutz Polis, 33, made history on Tuesday by being the first openly gay non-incumbent male elected to the United States Congress.

Polis, a Jew and a Democrat, will represent Colorado's 2nd District.

Another Jewish candidate to join Congress for the first time was John Adler, a Democrat who won an open seat in Trenton, New Jersey, after Republican Jim Saxton, who held the seat for 20 years, retired this year.

All six Jewish freshmen in the U.S. House of Representatives will return to Washington in January, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported Wednesday."
