Bill Clinton Takes on the Polarizing Issue - The Caucus - Politics - New York Times Blog: "He also said that Mrs. Clinton had worked with Republicans, including Senator Lindsay Graham, Republican of South Carolina.
And then he painted this scene: “She and John McCain are very close,” he said. “They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history and they’re afraid they’d put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other.”
Of the attacks on his wife, he added: “She can’t help the fact that they beat up on her for 15 years, and when they didn’t have me to kick around anymore, they turned all their fire on her.”
But, he said, “We’ll unite this country by doing things together, that’s what’ll happen,” he predicted. “Do I believe she can do it? Absolutely.”
He then told the story of a friend who went to work for her campaign in New Hampshire. The friend had said he was “sick and tired of people bad-mouthing her,” people who didn’t know her. He quoted the friend as saying that everyone who knows her likes her, trusts her, respects her and would “walk through a fire with her,” which brought"
