It may get worse for the Republicans and very soon. Newt may run! As in Newt Gingrich!
The danger for the GOP is that they are increasingly likely to lose in Nov. 2008. However, there are two ways to lose. You can lose with the grace of respectability, in effect launching your come back or .. you can lose in a way that drags the GOP down toward that special place inhabited by parties of the past.

Gingrich would surely lose to any reasonable Dem. He is a smart mouth, full of himself. His family creds are as bad as any of the Republicans with more marital detritus than Giuliani. BUT, he could unite the rump left after the debacle and would be strong enough to prevent the possible reformers ... .Schwarznegger, Mccain, etc. from defining a new center of the party.

The problem is Gingrich is a ruthless campaigner in the Ailes-Rove tradition. But, the dems have learned a lot since Newt pulled his contract on America and Newtonian physics has, I believe, been superceded by Kos, bloggerdom, Dean, and the Clinton machine.

His candidacy would, in my opinion, be bad news for the US and good news for those seeking DemoDomination. For the pubs to come back they really need to seek their roots as European style liberals and let the religious irridentism, terror mongering and scandals die away.

The GOP needs a fresh start.
